Meet Tyrion β The Atlas's Celestial Canine Companion β

Every explorer needs a faithful companion. Mine happens to prefer car rides, treats, and uninterrupted naps to philosophical debate.
Meet Tyrion: my real-life dog, my desk-chair companion, and the unofficial canine member of the Urantia Cosmos Atlas team.
The actual dog behind the cosmic adventures β
Tyrion is a little over ten years old. In the affectionate language of βdog years,β I sometimes introduce him as a 77-year-old gentlemanβa joke, not a precise biological age conversion.
He is fluffy, funny-looking in the most endearing way, and equipped with two perfectly real eyes. If you've seen the one-eyed celestial version of Tyrion elsewhere on this website, that's an intentionally exaggerated bit of AI-generated comedy. His imaginary adventures do not replace the genuine article.
He isn't responsible for the Atlas's proposition numbers, source verification, or editorial conclusions. His contribution is more difficult to quantify: he helps remind me that a universe full of difficult questions still contains small, fluffy, thoroughly enjoyable things.
Tyrion's priorities β
His interests are refreshingly straightforward:
- Car rides: his absolute favourite activity. If a vehicle is involved, he's interested.
- Walks: a chance to inspect the neighbourhood and conduct independent field research.
- Food and treats: especially when rolling over might improve the odds of receiving one.
- Sleep: preferably in comfort and without an unsolicited wake-up call.
- Keeping me company: when I'm working at my desk, he likes to sleep on the chair behind me.
That last habit makes him a uniquely qualified research assistant. I do the writing; Tyrion curls up just behind me, closes both of his perfectly real eyes, and conducts a rigorous, uninterrupted study of napping.
But whenever the Atlas opens its storybook doors to the cosmos, a little celestial mischief occurs. A sprinkle of imaginary stardust transforms my two-eyed companion into Tyrion the Celestial Cyclops: a cute, fluffy, one-eyed explorer with a glowing collar, an extraordinary talent for locating treats, and absolutely no interest in proofreading footnotes.
Throughout the Atlas's fictional illustrations, Tyrion appears as this lovable little celestial cyclops. The real Tyrion still has two eyes, of courseβand both versions would prefer that you keep your hands off their faces.
Personal boundaries, strictly enforced β
Tyrion does not like having his face touched. He can also become distinctly grouchy if someone interrupts a perfectly good nap.
At his age, I respect these policies. They are clearer than some of the documents I've encountered in research.
There is, however, an important difference between Tyrion and the imaginary celestial bureaucrats who occasionally populate our comedy pages: Tyrion is real. I know him, live with him, and enjoy his company. Any heavenly offices, cosmic credentials, or elaborate uniforms attributed to him are purely playful inventions.
Why Tyrion belongs in the Atlas β
I created this website to explore big ideas with curiosity and intellectual care. But I don't want the work to become so solemn that we forget the simple pleasures of being alive.
Tyrion is an excellent reminder that companionship, humour, and affection matter too. The Atlas is serious about its research, not about pretending its editor never laughs.
Occasionally, you'll spot a fanciful version of Tyrion visiting an observatory, consulting a celestial library, or supervising the maps. Those are clearly fictional AI-generated illustrations inspired by my very real companion.
For the record, Tyrion has never authenticated a cosmic chart. He has shown considerable enthusiasm for the transportation necessary to get to one.
π Celestial Intermission β A Matter of Personal Boundaries
An entirely fictional dispatch from the Reversion Directors' Department of Canine Relations.
TYRION: βTwo rules. Don't touch my face. Don't wake me from a nap.β
REVERSION DIRECTOR: βRemarkable. We have an unverified report that one of the Ancients of Days shares your objection to unsolicited facial contact.β
MORTAL: βCan we verify that?β
REVERSION DIRECTOR: βYou may submit an inquiry. Personally.β
MORTAL: βOn second thought, perhaps not.β
The External Verification Registry has elected not to investigate this particular claim in person.
This entire exchange is fictional humourβnot a quotation from The Urantia Book, a revelation, or a factual claim about the Ancients of Days.
Truth. Beauty. Goodness. HUMOUR. And occasionally, a well-earned nap.
