Evidence & Verification

What happens when a remarkable claim meets evidence we can actually examine?

Picture two encounters with the same night sky.

One reader opens The Urantia Book and finds a description of the universe. Another looks through a telescope, studies a scientific paper, or follows the measurements that have transformed astronomy. Both are drawn by curiosityβ€”but they are asking different kinds of questions.

What does the book say?

What can the evidence establish?

And what should we do when the two don't seem to agree?

Not every idea in The Urantia Book is a scientific proposition. Its spiritual teachings and philosophical possibilities deserve to be read in their own context. But some of its statements concern distances, dates, human origins, and events in the natural world. Those claims can be compared with independent research.

This isn't a courtroom where the bookβ€”or its readersβ€”must defend their worth. Think of it as an observatory: a place to look carefully, welcome discoveries, and remain willing to change our minds. A beautiful idea need not lose its human meaning when a factual assertion encounters difficulty. Nor does personal meaning exempt a factual assertion from examination.

That's why we built the External Verification Registry (EVR). Each investigation has its own permanent page and distinguishes what the text says, what independent evidence indicates, and what remains uncertain. Readers can trace the cited sources, see the classification and its limits, and judge the reasoning for themselves.

We aren't looking for a predetermined verdict. We're looking for a clearer view.

Begin with a Question

You don't need to read twenty-seven research entries before you can begin.

Start with three questions, each asking something different of the evidence:

Notice what makes these investigations interesting: they don't all end the same way. One examines a claim contradicted by modern astronomical measurements. Another distinguishes a mathematical or genealogical possibility from proof of a named historical individual. A third turns on the meaning and scope of a word as ordinary as all.

The point isn't to force every question toward a matching conclusion. It's to make the question precise enough that evidence can speak to it.

How we verify sources β†’ β€” Each completed source audit identifies what material was actually inspected, how deeply it was reviewed, and what it does or does not establish. The first documented audit pilot was EVR-022 β€” Comparative Claims about World Religions. So far, 10 of 27 records have completed a documented source audit; 17 still await one. See the audited entries below.

Human Review & Socratic Dialogues β€” Pilot

Behind a classification is another important question: Who actually examined the sources, and how much did they read?

This is where we make the difference between AI-assisted checks, a person's documented review, and independent expert assessment visible.

Human Editorial Review: EVR-022 β€” Working Record β†’

Follow what the editor personally read, challenged, and has not yet approved. This is a developing, transparent review processβ€”not independent expert peer review or blanket certification of AI-assisted research.

The Mortal & His Thought Adjuster β€” Episode 1 β†’

Enjoy the clearly fictional Socratic companion to EVR-022, which explores how the meanings of Deity, worship, and religion affect the investigation. The dialogue does not substitute for the documented human review.

At a Glance

A classification is a signpost, not a final judgment on the whole book. It tells you what a specific comparison currently supports, challenges, or leaves unsettled.

These are assessments of particular, defined claimsβ€”not verdicts on a person's faith, a book's entire message, or the value of its spiritual and philosophical insights. COMPATIBLE is not the same as independently confirmed; IN TENSION is not the same as decisively falsified; and UNRESOLVED and UNSUPPORTED describe different limits of the evidence. The precise standards are set out in the methodology.

27 permanent research records: 0 confirmed Β· 9 compatible Β· 2 unresolved Β· 1 unsupported Β· 11 in tension Β· 4 falsified. These totals count each EVR record by its primary proposition's formal evidential classification, following the editor-approved reclassification of EVR-009's historical claim to UNRESOLVED (LOW evidence strength) on October 26, 2026. EVR-009's separate subsidiary genealogical-possibility finding remains COMPATIBLE (MODERATE evidence strength) and is not an additional record. The counts summarize specific investigations, not a score of the book's overall truth or spiritual value. An assigned classification does not mean the newer source audit has been completed; findings may change when evidence or interpretations are reassessed.

Source-audit progress: 10 / 27 completed Β· 17 remaining. AI-assisted source checks and personal human editorial review are separate activities.

Source-awareness: Some scientific claims describe knowledge available when the book appeared in 1955. The record considers the text's disclosures about limitations of revelation (Foreword 0:12.11 and Paper 101:4.1–4.2), without treating those disclosures as independent scientific verification. See the methodology.

Source-Audit Coverage

A reference list tells us where to look. A source audit asks the more demanding question: What was actually checked?

We record those differences openly so an accessible abstract, a reviewed excerpt, and a full examination of an original study are not quietly treated as equivalent.

Focused source-verification audits completed: EVR-001 β€” Mercury's Rotation, EVR-002 β€” Andromeda's Distance, EVR-003 β€” Angona and Solar-System Origins, EVR-004 β€” The 550-Million-Year Origin of Life, EVR-005 β€” The Six Sangik Races, EVR-006 β€” Dalamatia, a City 500,000 Years Ago, EVR-007 β€” Inuit and the Original Urantia Aborigines, EVR-008 β€” The First True Humans About One Million Years Ago, EVR-009 β€” Andon and Fonta as Ancestors of All Humanity, and EVR-022 β€” Comparative Claims about World Religions.

For these ten records, the audit notes document the actual access and review depth of the cited material, which may include directly accessible passages, abstracts, or excerpts, with AI assistance. This does not mean that all research papers were read in full, all claims independently reproduced, or the records professionally peer-reviewed. The other 17 entries have not yet received a documented source-verification audit under this standard.

Beyond a Classification

What happens after the classification?

Perhaps a literal astronomical claim fails when compared with modern measurements. The resulting disappointment can coexist with something else: amazement at how much human observation has revealed.

Perhaps a claim proves compatible with a model, but not uniquely supported by it. That's a different discovery, and an important distinction.

Or perhaps the available evidence simply cannot answer the question yet.

Scientific and historical findings speak most directly to the specific assertion and interpretation being tested. A factual claim left unverifiedβ€”or shown to be mistakenβ€”does not automatically settle separate questions of philosophical insight, literary beauty, spiritual meaning, or how we ought to treat one another. But those values also do not excuse us from taking contrary evidence seriously.

There is also a human question worth asking alongside, not instead of, the evidence review: What happens when a meaningful picture of the universe meets a discovery that challenges it? A reader might revise an interpretation, reconsider a cherished expectation, or find a new reason to value patient inquiry. Such responses belong to the study of narrative, values, and meaning. They cannot change a measured distance, authenticate a historical claim, or overturn an EVR classification.

If a reader leaves with a better question, a clearer sense of what the sources establish, or renewed appreciation for humanity's growing knowledge of the universe, this Registry has done meaningful work.

Wonder and verification aren't rivals. When we keep their roles clear, each can make the other more worthwhile.

Celestial Intermission β€” An unofficial memo from the Reversion Directors (fictional humour)

β€œYour research has been approved. However, after twenty-seven investigations, we recommend occasionally looking up from your footnotes. The universe is still out there.”

This is fictional satire, not a quotation from The Urantia Book, a spiritual communication, or evidence for any EVR assessment.

About This Registry

The EVR works alongside, but remains separate from, the Propositional Logic Registry. Logical consistency does not establish factual truth, and disagreement with external evidence does not automatically create an internal logical contradiction.
