Authorship Assessment Registry β
An independent, cumulative evaluation of The Urantia Book's claims to celestial authorship.
Guiding question: Does the available evidence distinguish literal celestial authorship from plausible forms of human authorship or human-mediated spiritual composition?
This registry separates three questions that can influence one another but must not be treated as equivalent:
- Logical consistency: How well do the book's propositions fit together?
- External credibility: How well do its independently testable assertions correspond with reality?
- Authorship credibility: Does the combined evidence specifically support the book's claim of celestial origin?
A logically coherent text does not necessarily come from celestial authors. An externally accurate observation does not, by itself, establish the identity of its author. Conversely, finding an error in a particular assertion does not automatically determine how every other claim should be evaluated.
Scope and epistemic status
This page evaluates claims and evidence, not the worth of readers, their experiences, or their spiritual commitments. The conclusions below remain provisional, and the project does not presume either celestial authorship or deliberate fabrication.
1. Questions under evaluation β
| Dimension | Principal test | What the finding does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Logical consistency | Can two registered propositions be shown to assert P β§ Β¬P under the same relevant interpretation and scope? | Truth, supernatural inspiration, or authorship identity |
| External credibility | Do independently checkable historical, scientific, or factual statements withstand relevant evidence? | Celestial authorship merely because a claim proves accurate |
| Authorship credibility | Does the overall evidence favor a celestial-origin hypothesis over specified alternatives? | A defensible numerical probability without sufficient comparative evidence |
Three working conclusions β not one verdict β
Logical consistency β provisionally assessed. The propositional analysis has not established a formal contradiction in the material registered through the Foreword and Paper 9. That finding remains bounded by the portions analyzed, the interpretations tested, and the project's analytical methods. Six interpretive tensions in Paper 9 remain open. It does not mean that the complete book has been proved contradiction-free.
External credibility β under continuing investigation. Individual empirical and historical claims receive their own evidence assessments in the External Verification Registry. This page does not replace or silently revise those assessments. Compatible, unsupported, in-tension, and falsified claims must retain their distinct meanings.
Authorship credibility β not established. Internal coherence alone does not discriminate sufficiently between celestial authorship and capable human composition. An overall judgment requires comparative evidence about textual provenance, available human sources, independently testable content, and competing explanations.
2. Authorship hypotheses β
These hypotheses organize comparisons; none receives automatic priority merely from the text's own claims.
| Code | Working hypothesis | What would be needed to assess it |
|---|---|---|
| H-HUM | Human authors or editors produced the text through identifiable human processes. | Documentary history, manuscript development, source comparisons, transmission records |
| H-MED | Humans produced or transmitted the text while interpreting the process as spiritual or revelatory. | Testable provenance where possible; careful distinction between subjective experience and verifiable origin |
| H-CEL | Nonhuman celestial intelligences authored or substantially dictated the text, as claimed by the work. | Independent, discriminating evidence that goes beyond the claim itself and is difficult to account for under H-HUM or H-MED |
Important: These possibilities may not be mutually exclusive in every formulation. For instance, a proponent might claim celestial content expressed through human language and existing human sources. Any such combined hypothesis must specify which contribution it predicts and what observations might count against it. An explanation that accommodates every possible outcome offers little discriminating value.
3. Rules of evidence β
- Separate assertion from inference. Record what the text actually says before evaluating what might follow from it.
- Preserve attribution. A narrator's claim to authority does not independently verify that authority.
- Apply lexical-scope analysis. Check meaning, referent, quantifiers, time, descriptive level, speaker, and jurisdiction before registering contradiction or agreement.
- Avoid circular confirmation. The book cannot independently validate its own authorship by asserting that its authors are celestial.
- Require discriminating evidence. Ask whether an observation is substantially more expected under H-CEL than under plausible human alternatives.
- Track prior availability. For alleged previously unknown knowledge, document exactly what was publicly available before publication and what the text specifically predicted.
- Distinguish compatibility from confirmation. A statement that accommodates a later discovery may not have predicted that discovery.
- Register adverse evidence. Failed or inaccurate claims receive attention alongside apparent successes; no selective counting.
- Avoid double-counting. Related propositions, source documents, or dependent evidence do not become independent confirmations merely because they appear in different registries.
- Retain uncertainty. Use undetermined when the evidence cannot support a defensible conclusion; do not invent probability percentages.
- Keep the registries independent. An authorship assessment may reference a proposition or EVR record, but never alter its permanent ID, wording, or adjudication by implication.
- Permit revision. Record what changed, why it changed, and which new evidence caused the update.
4. Evidence-to-authorship reasoning β
For every significant item, examine this chain:
Textual assertion β exact logical proposition β independent evidence β alternative explanations β relevance to authorship.
A positive logical-consistency result concerns the first two links. An externally verified fact concerns the third. A claim about celestial authorship requires the additional comparison with alternative explanations.
| Observation | Supports logical consistency? | Bears on external credibility? | Distinguishes celestial from human authorship? |
|---|---|---|---|
| No established contradiction within the analyzed portion | Yes, within stated scope | Not by itself | Weakly, if at all, without comparison |
| Precise claim confirmed by independent evidence | Not necessarily | Yes | Potentially, depending on prior availability and specificity |
| Precise claim contradicted by well-established evidence | Not necessarily | Yes, negatively | Potentially, depending on the claim and the hypothesis's commitments |
| Extensive similarity to an earlier human source | Not necessarily | Relevant to provenance | Relevant, but compatible with some mixed-source formulations |
| Spiritual meaning or personal transformation | Not a formal consistency test | Not ordinarily an independent historical or scientific test | Personally important, but generally not independently discriminating |
A Bayesian framing may help organize the reasoning: posterior odds = prior odds Γ likelihood ratio. Here the likelihood ratio asks how much more (or less) likely a particular observation would be under H-CEL than under H-HUM. This is a reasoning framework, not a numerical result. Without defensible prior probabilities and likelihood estimates, the project will not publish invented odds.
5. Authorship Evidence Ledger β
Each entry should address one evidentiary question. Use UB-AU-### identifiers for this registry only. These identifiers are distinct from permanent proposition IDs (UB-009-P###) and External Verification Registry IDs (UB-EVR-###).
UB-AU-001 β Internal coherence through Paper 9 β
- Evidence family: Internal logical consistency
- Linked records: Master Proposition Index; Paper 9
- Observation: The project has completed the Foreword and Papers 1β9, including permanent Paper 9 propositions
UB-009-P001βUB-009-P540. No formal contradiction has been established within the registered material at this checkpoint; six Paper 9 interpretive tensions remain unresolved. - Limits: Incomplete whole-book coverage; unresolved interpretive questions; consistency testing does not establish empirical truth.
- Alternative explanation: Coherent and carefully qualified theological systems can be composed by humans.
- Authorship significance: Low discriminatory value on its own. This observation does not establish H-CEL.
- Status: Recorded; ongoing evaluation
- Next review: At the next substantive paper-level consistency checkpoint and again during whole-book analysis.
UB-AU-002 β External-verification synthesis β
- Evidence family: Independent historical and empirical testing
- Linked records: External Verification Registry
- Question: Do the full set of EVR findings, including adverse outcomes, collectively distinguish H-CEL from human alternatives?
- Observation: No aggregate authorship inference has yet been authorized from the EVR entries.
- Limits: An EVR judgment applies to its specified claim and evidence, not automatically to the authorship hypothesis as a whole.
- Authorship significance: Undetermined pending a documented, balanced synthesis.
- Status: Open research question
- Next review: At the Paper 9 EVR reconciliation gate and at subsequent paper-level reconciliations.
UB-AU-003 β Historical provenance and human-source research β
- Evidence family: Document history and source criticism
- Question: What can independent documentation establish about manuscript transmission, editorial development, and relationships to pre-publication human writings?
- Required evidence: Primary documents where available; dated manuscript evidence; exact side-by-side textual comparisons; credible provenance and counterarguments.
- Limits: Similarity alone does not identify the final author; a claim of human-source use also does not independently validate a celestial intermediary.
- Authorship significance: Undetermined pending source-specific records.
- Status: Research pending; no factual verdict entered

7. Questions that remain open β
- How strong is the book's internal consistency after completing all 196 papers, including cross-paper and whole-book analysis?
- Which independently testable statements were demonstrably unavailable to relevant human writers before 1955?
- Which statements conflict with well-established evidence, and how do the book's own qualifications affect their scope?
- How extensive and explanatory are documented parallels to earlier human texts?
- Does any evidence distinguish literal celestial communication from human composition more strongly than it distinguishes a text from ordinary error?
- What observations, if any, would require revising the current authorship assessment?
8. Working assessment and revision history β
Current logical-consistency assessment: No established formal contradiction within the material analyzed through Paper 9; six interpretive tensions in Paper 9 remain open. A whole-book judgment remains premature.
Current external-credibility assessment: Mixed claims and outcomes require independent, entry-level EVR review; no single aggregate verdict is asserted here.
Current authorship-credibility assessment: Celestial authorship remains a hypothesis, not an established conclusion. The current internal-consistency finding alone does not justify assigning a numerical likelihood or privileging H-CEL over well-specified human alternatives.
