UB-EVR-017 β Anthropomorphic Conceptions of God β
Source Proposition: UB-004-P229
Canonical Reference: 4:3.1
Classification: HIST Β· THEO Β· META
EVR Status: COMPATIBLE
Claim Under Review β
Human beings have long conceived God as resembling themselves.
External Evidence β
Anthropomorphic conceptions of deity have a well-documented history. Xenophanes, writing in the sixth and fifth centuries BCE, criticized humans for representing gods in their own image. He observed that different peoples portrayed their gods with physical characteristics resembling their own and used this observation to challenge anthropomorphic conceptions of divinity.
Modern cognitive research likewise indicates that anthropomorphic reasoning about God can persist even when individuals explicitly endorse sophisticated theological concepts. Experimental research has found that people who consciously describe God using attributes such as omniscience and omnipresence may nevertheless make implicit inferences that attribute more humanlike psychological limitations to God.
Lexical-Scope Analysis β
The externally assessable component of UB-004-P229 concerns the historical and cognitive tendency of humans to conceptualize deity in humanlike terms.
The proposition's phrase βtoo longβ expresses an evaluative judgment and cannot be independently established by historical or cognitive evidence.
External evidence also cannot establish that God actually exists, determine God's attributes, or demonstrate that anthropomorphic conceptions misrepresent an independently existing Universal Father.
Accordingly, the evidence supports the proposition's descriptive anthropomorphism claim without verifying its larger theological framework.
Assessment β
COMPATIBLE
Historical evidence and modern cognitive research support the claim that humans have repeatedly conceptualized supernatural beings, including God, in anthropomorphic terms.
This compatibility does not verify the existence or nature of the Universal Father and does not establish the proposition's evaluative judgment that humanity has maintained such conceptions for βtoo long.β
Reconciliation Note β
This record reconciles the External Verification Registry with Paper 4 proposition UB-004-P229.
No change to the frozen Paper 4 propositional analysis is required.
