UB-EVR-018 β Science and God as First Cause β
Source Proposition: UB-004-P349
Canonical Reference: 4:4.7
Classification: SCI Β· THEO Β· META
EVR Status: IN TENSION
Claim Under Review β
Science conceptualizes God as the First Cause.
External Evidence β
Modern science ordinarily seeks empirically testable explanations of the natural world in terms of natural processes. Within this methodological framework, supernatural agency does not ordinarily function as a scientific explanatory cause.
Individual scientists may hold religious beliefs or interpret scientific findings within theological or metaphysical frameworks. Such interpretations, however, should be distinguished from conclusions established by science itself.
The historical meaning and boundaries of the term science have changed. Earlier intellectual traditions did not always separate natural philosophy, metaphysics, and theology as sharply as contemporary scientific disciplines generally do. This historical variation requires caution when applying the modern meaning of science to a text originating in the first half of the twentieth century.
Lexical-Scope Analysis β
The central lexical issue concerns the word βscience.β
If science refers to contemporary empirical natural science, the claim that science conceptualizes God as the First Cause does not accurately describe ordinary scientific methodology. Contemporary science does not generally identify God as an explanatory First Cause.
If the term is used in a broader historical sense encompassing systematic philosophical or metaphysical inquiry, the proposition becomes less clearly inconsistent with historical usage.
A further distinction must therefore be preserved between:
- science establishing or employing God as a First Cause;
- individual scientists believing in God as a First Cause; and
- philosophical or theological interpretations of scientific knowledge that infer a First Cause.
These are not equivalent claims.
Assessment β
IN TENSION
Contemporary scientific methodology does not generally conceptualize God as the First Cause. Science ordinarily investigates natural phenomena through empirically accessible natural processes rather than invoking supernatural agency as part of its explanatory methodology.
Historical variation in the meaning and disciplinary boundaries of science, however, prevents a stronger classification such as FALSIFIED without additional evidence establishing the intended lexical scope of the term in the proposition.
The proposition therefore remains in tension with the ordinary modern understanding of science while retaining some lexical-historical ambiguity.
