UB-EVR-024 β€” Religion across Postmoral Human Development

Source proposition: UB-005-P432
Canonical source: 5:5.3
Classification: ANTH Β· REL Β· EVO
EVR status: COMPATIBLE

Claim Under Review

The Paper 5 narrator states that religion is unfailingly exhibited at all postmoral stages of human development.

The term β€œunfailingly” gives the proposition unusually strong universal force. The claim therefore requires more than evidence that religion is merely common or historically influential.

External Evidence

Cross-cultural anthropology provides substantial evidence that religious and supernatural beliefs and practices occur with extraordinary regularity across human societies.

Comparative research on hunter-gatherer societies describes religion as a human cultural universal and finds religious traits among geographically diverse small-scale societies. Evolutionary reconstruction within this research identifies animistic belief as an especially ancient component of human religious development.

Large-scale cross-cultural research using ethnographic evidence from 114 societies likewise documents supernatural explanations across geographically and culturally diverse human populations, although the subjects and frequency of such explanations vary among societies.

Contemporary research also continues to describe religion as a cross-cultural human universal while recognizing substantial variation in individual belief, including atheism, religious doubt, and highly secular populations.

The available evidence therefore strongly supports the recurrent presence of religious or supernatural phenomena across human cultures.

Lexical-Scope Assessment

The proposition must distinguish cultural universality from individual universality.

Evidence that religion occurs across human societies does not entail:

βˆ€x[HUMAN(x) β†’ RELIGIOUS(x)]

Atheists, skeptics, doubters, and otherwise nonreligious individuals exist within human societies.

The proposition is therefore best tested at the level specified by its developmental language:

βˆ€x[POSTMORAL_HUMAN_CULTURAL_STAGE(x) β†’ RELIGIOUS_PHENOMENA_PRESENT(x)]

The term β€œreligion” must also retain meaningful boundaries. It should not be expanded to include every instance of symbolic thought, morality, ritualized behavior, or cultural tradition merely to preserve the universal claim.

Conversely, the absence of a distinct Western-style institutional category called β€œreligion” within a society does not establish the absence of religious or supernatural phenomena.

Assessment

Cross-cultural evidence strongly supports religion or supernatural belief and practice as an exceptionally widespread and plausibly universal feature of human cultures.

The evidence therefore aligns substantially with the Paper 5 proposition when its scope concerns human cultural or developmental stages rather than every individual human being.

Available evidence cannot demonstrate literal exceptionlessness across every human society and every postmoral stage throughout human prehistory. The universal force of β€œunfailingly” therefore exceeds what empirical research can conclusively establish.

The proposition nevertheless remains compatible with the observed anthropological record.

Reconciliation Note

This record retrospectively reconciles the External Verification Registry with Paper 5 proposition UB-005-P432.

The assessment preserves the universal force of β€œunfailingly” while distinguishing cultural or developmental-stage universality from individual religiosity.

No change to the completed and frozen Paper 5 proposition registry is required.
