Evidence & Verification β€” Methodology

The External Verification Registry evaluates externally testable claims made in The Urantia Book against independent historical, scientific, archaeological, astronomical, geological, biological, textual, and other relevant evidence.

This registry operates separately from the Propositional Logic Registry.

The Propositional Logic Registry asks:

What exactly does the text assert, and does it remain logically consistent with its other assertions?

The External Verification Registry asks:

When the text makes a claim about externally observable reality, how well does that claim correspond with independent evidence?

Internal consistency does not establish external truth.

External disagreement does not automatically establish logical contradiction.

The two analyses remain distinct.

Methodological Principle

Each external-verification record must distinguish among:

  1. The Urantia Book's actual claim
  2. The strongest reasonable interpretation of that claim
  3. Relevant independent evidence
  4. The current evidential status
  5. The confidence warranted by the available evidence

The registry must not strengthen or weaken the canonical wording merely to produce a preferred result.

Claims should be evaluated according to the evidence available at the time of review.

Named scientific, historical, and canonical references should include a direct clickable link to the original publication or authoritative institutional resource wherever one is available. Avoid unlinked titles and general-purpose homepages when a specific article or passage exists. Prefer freely readable originals, and identify publisher abstracts, previews, paywalls, and access restrictions honestly. Before publication, test source destinations separately from internal navigation and from the site's deployed public URLs. A link to an existing publication is not, by itself, evidence that the publication supports the Atlas's summary.

Source-Verification Audit Standard

Purpose. A working URL and a respectable publisher do not establish that a citation supports the claim attributed to it. For each EVR record, assess the actual cited passage and disclose how much of the source was reviewed. A source's review depth is separate from the EVR record's verification status (for example, COMPATIBLE or IN TENSION), evidence strength, and any independent expert assessment.

Use one of the following review-depth descriptions per source:

  1. Not yet audited β€” The source is listed, but no documented support check exists. This is the default for existing EVR citations unless an audit says otherwise.
  2. Destination checked only β€” The URL and source identity were verified; the substantive claim was not checked.
  3. Relevant passages reviewed β€” Identified sections were inspected directly and compared with a specific EVR claim. This is not the same as reading the whole work.
  4. Extended source review β€” A documented review covers the source's main argument, qualifications, methodology or evidence, and material counterpoints. It still does not imply an exhaustive literature review.

Independent specialist review is recorded separately, and only when a named qualified reviewer actually provides it. An AI-assisted review must not be described as independent expert peer review.

Minimum audit record: For each inspected reference, record the source title and direct link; the EVR proposition or assertion at issue; exact passage, section, or page checked where available; review depth; whether the source supports, qualifies, challenges, or does not address the proposition; significant scope limitations and contrary evidence; the review date; and whether the inspection was AI-assisted, human-conducted, or independently reviewed. Distinguish access to full text from an abstract, excerpt, paywalled preview, or secondary summary.

Adjudication rule: Never infer that an entire book, article, religion, or research field has been surveyed from an inspected excerpt. Verify quotations and passage locations before presenting them as checked. Preserve canonical wording, narrator attribution, lexical scope, universal quantifiers, and uncertain historical referents. A review that raises problems should record the limitations or outstanding questions rather than silently force a preferred classification. Change EVR classifications only through documented reassessment.

Rollout rule: Apply this standard prospectively and audit older records progressively. No audit note means not yet audited, not that a source has been checked or that it is necessarily defective. Start with UB-EVR-022 β€” Comparative Claims about World Religions, the pilot whose relevant source passages were inspected without claiming a comprehensive literature review.

Canonical Disclosure: Limits of Revelation and Later Science

The Urantia Book explicitly describes constraints on its own use of contemporary knowledge. In the Foreword, 0:12.11, its narrator says the presentations give preference to the highest existing human concepts. In 101:4.1–101:4.2, β€œThe Limitations of Revelation”, the narrator describes restrictions against imparting premature scientific discoveries and anticipates that statements concerning the physical sciences will require revision as scientific knowledge develops. The same passage says its cosmology is not inspired.

Historical-knowledge reminder: The book appeared in 1955; an EVR review conducted in 2026 can draw on evidence unavailable at publication. The canonical text remains quoted and assessed as published, rather than silently updated to match present-day findings. The narrator's warning concerns the anticipated revision of scientific statements and understandings; it does not itself direct an editorial rewriting of the book.

Evidence rule: This disclosure forms part of the text's interpretive context, but does not automatically verify any scientific assertion, explain every discrepancy, or establish the revelators' claimed identity. Neither does a scientifically outdated assertion, by itself, decide the status of the book's separate philosophical or spiritual assertions. Each externally testable proposition still receives an independent assessment against current evidence, with its wording, domain, temporal scope, and level of description preserved.

Paper-Completion EVR Reconciliation Gate

Before analysis advances from one Urantia Book paper to the next, the completed paper must undergo an External Verification Registry reconciliation pass.

The reconciliation must:

  1. review all external-verification candidates flagged during propositional analysis;
  2. distinguish empirically accessible claims from metaphysical, theological, or otherwise non-discriminating claims;
  3. investigate serious candidates against relevant independent evidence;
  4. register a permanent EVR record only when the claim and available evidence support a meaningful external assessment;
  5. record the appropriate verification status without strengthening or weakening the canonical claim;
  6. update the Registry Summary and sidebar navigation for every new permanent record; and
  7. confirm that no flagged candidate remains unintentionally unresolved before the next paper begins.

A screened candidate does not require a permanent EVR record merely because it was flagged during propositional analysis. Candidates may be excluded when they do not yield a sufficiently discriminating empirical test, provided that the reconciliation explicitly resolves their disposition.

Completion of propositional analysis and completion of EVR reconciliation therefore constitute separate closing gates.

A paper may proceed to the next paper only after both gates have been completed.

Verification Status

CONFIRMED

Independent evidence materially corroborates the specific claim.

Confirmation requires more than mere compatibility.

COMPATIBLE

The claim does not conflict with established evidence, but available evidence does not independently confirm it.

Compatibility is not confirmation.

UNRESOLVED

Available evidence does not presently justify either confirmation or rejection.

This category also applies when relevant evidence remains incomplete, ambiguous, or genuinely disputed.

UNSUPPORTED

No adequate independent evidence supports the claim despite circumstances in which corroborating evidence might reasonably be expected.

Unsupported does not necessarily mean false.

IN TENSION

The claim significantly conflicts with current evidence or established interpretation, but uncertainties in wording, evidence, dating, classification, or interpretation prevent a decisive falsification judgment.

FALSIFIED

The claim, under its strongest reasonable literal interpretation, directly conflicts with well-established independent evidence.

A FALSIFIED classification requires substantially stronger evidence than mere disagreement with a prevailing theory.

NOT EMPIRICALLY TESTABLE

The claim concerns a reality for which no presently available independent empirical test exists.

Examples may include claims concerning Paradise, Thought Adjusters, morontia existence, celestial personalities, survival after death, or other metaphysical realities.

These claims may still undergo logical or philosophical analysis elsewhere, but lack an external empirical verdict here.

Evidence Strength

Each evidential assessment receives one of three confidence levels:

  • HIGH β€” multiple strong independent lines of evidence or direct measurement
  • MODERATE β€” substantial evidence exists, but meaningful uncertainty remains
  • LOW β€” evidence remains limited, indirect, preliminary, or highly interpretation-dependent

Evidence strength describes confidence in the verification assessment, not confidence in The Urantia Book itself.

Claim Classes

Use one or more of the following tags where appropriate:

  • ASTR β€” astronomy / astrophysics
  • PLAN β€” planetary science
  • GEO β€” geology / geophysics
  • BIO β€” biology / genetics
  • EVOL β€” evolutionary biology
  • PALEO β€” paleoanthropology / paleontology
  • ARCH β€” archaeology
  • HIST β€” history
  • CHRON β€” chronology / dating
  • ANTH β€” anthropology
  • LING β€” linguistics
  • PHYS β€” physics
  • CHEM β€” chemistry
  • MED β€” medicine / physiology
  • PSY β€” psychology
  • SOC β€” sociology
  • PROV β€” provenance / authorship
  • TEXT β€” textual history
  • META β€” metaphysical claim outside ordinary empirical testing

Multiple classifications may apply.

Record Structure

Each permanent record uses the following format:

text
UB-EVR-###

Example:

text
UB-EVR-001

Permanent EVR identifiers are global and sequential.

They do not replace proposition IDs.

Where a corresponding permanent proposition exists, the EVR record should link to it.

Reconciliation Archive

Paper 8 β€” EVR Reconciliation Completion

Paper: 8 β€” The Infinite Spirit
Canonical range: 8:0.1–8:6.7
Permanent proposition range: UB-008-P001–UB-008-P334
Propositions screened: 334
Provisional candidate families: 4
New permanent EVR records: 0
Reconciliation status: COMPLETE

Candidate Dispositions

  1. UB-008-P093–P095 β€” First Cause reasoning: Not admitted. The available evidence does not independently establish the asserted conceptual necessity of a First Cause. Related but distinct from UB-EVR-018.
  2. UB-008-P107–P114 β€” Expansion of relational understanding: Not admitted as a duplicate. The terrestrial developmental claim family is already represented by UB-EVR-010; cosmic extensions remain externally unverified.
  3. UB-008-P135–P137 β€” Matter-first explanations: Not admitted as a duplicate. The claim family is already represented by UB-EVR-011. Evidence of intuitive dualism requires careful distinction from explicit philosophical materialism.
  4. UB-008-P132 β€” Infinite Spirit and cosmic mind confusion: Not admitted. The claim lacks sufficiently specified independent historical and lexical referents for a reliable external-verification judgment.

Closure

All four provisional candidate families have received explicit dispositions. No additional permanent EVR record is warranted. The registry remains at 27 permanent records, and its verification-status counts remain unchanged.

Paper 8's completed and frozen proposition registry remains unchanged. This reconciliation closes the separate Paper 8 EVR screening gate without asserting external confirmation of its theological or cosmological claims.
